Iron oxide pigments, which may be natural or synthetic, have been used as colorants since early humans began painting on cave walls. Oxides are manufactured colours made from natural materials. They have richer colouring properties and stronger opacity than earth and mineral pigments, giving stronger, more intense colours. Softer colours can of course be made by reducing the amount and/or adding titanium white pigment.
